In April 2026 Stefano Rossi proved his exceptional maturity and commanding presence under intense pressure at the Romanian National Opera, Iași. Invited by David Crescenzi on short notice, Stefano Rossi stepped in to conduct the dress rehearsal of Verdi’s Aida. This remarkable achievement was underscored by the fact that he had never before worked with or seen the orchestra, singers, and ballet, proving his exceptional ability to lead complex ensembles on impact.
Stefano Rossi is a rising presence on the international conducting scene, recognized for his exceptional technical foundation and rapid ascent in both the symphonic and especially operatic worlds. His profound understanding of orchestral mechanics—rooted in a decade of rigorous training as an oboist at Milan’s Conservatoire G. Verdi—gives him a unique insider’s perspective. This instrumental expertise, combined with deep training in composition and score reading, allows him to quickly build a strong rapport and artistic trust with the musicians he leads.
Stefano’s meticulous preparation and collaborative spirit have made him a highly sought-after assistant to some of the industry’s leading conductors. He has recently served as assistant conductor to Michele Mariotti, Chief Conductor of the Opera di Roma and Rai Orchestra, collaborating with the Bolzano Haydn Stiftung Orchestra and the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
His operatic credentials extend across Europe, notably serving as assistant conductor to David Crescenzi for major Verdi productions, including Simon Boccanegra at Opera Națională Română Cluj-Napoca, Il Trovatore and Rigoletto with the extraordinary participation of Federico Longhi at Opera Națională Română din Timișoara.
Most recently, his growing reputation in opera led to his selection as a shortlisted assistant conductor for the 2026 Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland.
On the global stage, Stefano has rapidly gained international recognition through standout performances at major competitions. He was shortlisted among the top 30 candidates worldwide for the 59th Besançon International Competition for Young Conductors in 2025. This achievement follows his success in 2022, when he won the 4th prize at the Nino Rota Conducting Competition in Matera, secured second prize at the Vienna Caneres International Competition, and received the prestigious Michael Beech Prize for Distinction in Conducting at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
His podium experience spans an extensive series of international masterclasses across Europe, where he refined his craft under the guidance of Maestro Jorma Panula and conducted prominent ensembles such as the Málaga Philharmonic under Antonio Silva, the Berlin Sinfonietta under Johannes Wildner, the Athens Philharmonia under Michalis Economou, and the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina under Giuseppe Lanzetta.
Stefano completed his Postgraduate (Master) in Orchestral Conducting at the prestigious Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, one of the finest music facilities in the United Kingdom, studying under Daniele Rosina and Michael Seal, Associate Conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. This advanced training builds upon a profound musical foundation laid in Italy, where he spent ten years studying oboe with Maestro Diego Dini Ciacci at Milan’s Conservatoire G. Verdi, alongside rigorous studies in composition and score reading with Maestro Irlando Danieli and Maestro Simone Fermani.
